These days, its probably easiest for individuals to begin accepting funds digitally by establishing a PayPal business account. I would recommend this to a fresh freelance developer who wants to telecommute and get paid easily from his/her clients who may be located practically anywhere in the world. Paypal issues you a debit card that works like a visa that you can spend your money with.

But this article isn't about Paypal, its about Authorize.net, which has been the biggest player in the merchant account provider industry for years. I once had a merchant account with authorize.net that I used to accept payment for programming/hosting. I eventually discarded the merchant account because there was a moment I couldn't afford the cost of upkeep. The startup fee was $500, and an additional $150 once a year, and they took like 35 cents + 2.25% of the sale. Oh yeah and if I wanted to provide American Express (one of my clients only trusted merchants who provided for american express customers) there was an additional charge of $5/month.
